guy 1: middle aged war vet, like actually close to 50 not "fandom middle aged which means hes 30", with severe survivors guilt and ptsd, whose last (het) relationship was an abusive one who doesn't realize he was a victim of abuse because women don't abuse men? what are you talking about? definitely a typical guy in that way from the era before ours, formerly an alcoholic, something of an unsung war hero who never got recognized by govt because that would be admitting something went wrong enough to need a hero or that there was military action there in the first place

guy 2: wholesome golden haired blue-eyed 20something farmboy who just discovered after like 20 years that wait a sec, he's gay! and hero-worships vet guy and follows him around like a deputy sidekick but also maybe wants to do bad things to vet guy because he is something of a dominant sadist but only in bed!! he is kind and gentle and caring otherwise and he is very guilty and sorry about finding the idea of dominating vet guy hot and even worse after finding out about history of abuse is more or less a giant, sad, guilty dog :CCCC who thinks vetguy is better off with guy 3 anyway

guy 3: smarmy 30something lawyer who thinks dogboy is hilarious and vetguy is also hilarious but also interesting who prods at dogboy to go chase after vetguy then ends up accidentally emotionally invested in the outcome, cynical and detached and pretends to be superficial but used to love superhero stories when he was little but grew up and decided he was too mature for them and heroes arent real and lol if they were they'd be totally broken anyway, ends up finding one in vetguy, fuck, tries to get dogboy and vetguy to become a ship so that he's locked out so he can't get even more emotionally involved but then dogboy proposes why don't they both try to date vetguy at the same time and what the hell poly ships are a thing? ..........

meanwhile, vetguy has not noticed any of this is going on then gets asked out by two friends half his age at the same time >[[[???

Why does guy 2 think that guy 1 is better with guy 3? And how does sex work between them, or is there any? Considering guy 1's history.

dogboy thinks vetguy is better with the lawyer because the lawyer is the smartest and richest and most successful of them, he's the one that could best take care of somebody and help them with things if he's so inclined. lawyer thinks vetguy is better with dogboy because dogboy has all the emotional support and affection that lawyer can't give. basically both guys end up shipping each other with the guy in the middle who is oblivious that this is happening

as for the other thing, vetguy is a masochist which makes all the past history of abuse even more confusing for him, beyond the women can't abuse men belief he has, he's convinced for a long while that he can't say it's abuse if he liked it, his actual sexuality is a question mark, he was straight by default but willing to give anyone a chance if they like him hard enough, he's completely embarrassed about being a masochist though and has trouble talking about anything he wants or likes because it's a lot of things 'men don't do'

dogboy is a dominant (physical) sadist top but!! only in bed!! which works out nicely he hates hurting people in any way otherwise and is the biggest fluffy loyal dog who follows vetguy around and happily takes orders outside of bed and prefers to take orders because he's not the quickest mentally - he's smart, just not quick - and people know better than he does

lawyer guy is mainly asexual but he's a dominant (mental) sadist and participates by picking up the slack in the mind games and power play that dogboy can't think of by himself, he's not physically participating in sex but he's definitely there and involved when it happens and has lots of fun tossing fun new ideas about things they could do to vetguy at dogboy and making him turn bright red
