A+ picture choice, OP, though I get the impression you and OP 3 will be sworn enemies.

Poor fic readers, your lives are so hard.

Hey! You could actually use Secret Maker #2's solution: Find/Replace to reverse the names if it's not your preferred orientation.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
OP
Hah. Maybe I'll try this. But I imagine when the author is really into the size difference, which is when I find it the most off putting, it would just get hilarious/confusing.

Think of it as a challenge of your F/R skills at swapping those sentences around, too.

I wouldn't really tag for that as an author, I think, but I get the frustration. There are some Stucky fics with pre-serum Steve topping, if you're interested.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't have even thought of tagging it before I got into the Supernatural fandom. Even if I have a preference, it's generally a pretty mild one, and most pairings I headcanon as switchy so the "wrong" character topping isn't going to throw me out of the story. But in Supernatural fandom (especially Wincest) "who tops" is a BIG DEAL, so I've started tagging it in self-defense.

OP
I think I was spoiled by spn that way. There was a segment of the fandom that always wrote Cas in a way I found crazy OC and because they usually tagged it bottom Cas I could avoid it.

Sorry, just saw this. I tend to prefer them post-WS, but I'll keep an eye out.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
can't you just scroll down to the sex scenes to figure out who's topping and then read the rest of the fic based on that if it's so important to you? (just ctrl+f for common words used in sex scenes if that makes it easier)

(Anonymous) 2016-08-08 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
+1 It's really not hard.

/obligatory "I ship you and secret maker #3" comment

Hey, I've been there too at times, but at the end of the day people are going to read whatever appeals to them, and no matter what the dynamic is that's fine.

I don't think authors should feel like they have to tag this, but I do think it would be useful for readers. There are definitely some readers who are picky about this, and it would make fic easier for them to find.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
So I understand: you won't read a 15K fic with IC characters and great plot (and matching romantic plot) if the two page sex scene at the end has the wrong bottom? Because the story's somehow ruined?

Just so I'm clear.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
OP
Since you asked for clarification!
Story isn't ruined, I'm just looking to get off and the story was a bad choice. I'm always happy to read great IC fanfic, but lbr: it's not that common. Tolerable fanfic with an explicit rating and some kinks I'm into is much easier to come by.
And I don't care so much about the bottom, it's more the rapturous descriptions of how tiny and delicate character A is in character B's giant hands etc.
I'm perfectly aware this is petty, I just got let down a few times and thought I'd make a secret about it.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I'd be more put off by the sex scene tacked on as an afterthought.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually read on another community that some people will never read fics tagged "bottom!A" and "top!B". Argument was that such a fic would contain stereotypical top/bottom dynamics and much OOCness to make the characters fit into said dynamics. And that the author probably didn't believe in switching.

I never tag because my smut doesn't go over 3k words.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
This sounds perfectly reasonable and I will start doing this too now. (I like a bit of switching and obsessive seme/uke fantasies bore me to death.)

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
OP
Well that frustrates me because I hate seme/uke stuff and that's why I want them to tag it. Sigh.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
If they ever get into Supernatural, they're going to have a serious lack of smut to read! Most people tag for who's on the bottom (if for no other reason, we'd rather not get yelled at for "triggering" somebody by having the "wrong" brother take it up the butt.)

This seems not to take into account that many authors tag based on what's standard to tag within their fandom, or because a reader requested that something be tagged. Tagging "top!A" or "bottom!B" might not mean that the author personally thinks that distinction is super important, but just that their readers expect it.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-08 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I actually tag for bottom!character in my fandom, just because it's so rare to see. But honestly, one of the characters in my OTP I just despise to see on bottom because a fan in the fandom has pretty much fetishized it so much that it's ruined it for me completely. Like, I wasn't a big fan of it in the beginning anyway (the character has a lot of traits that don't exactly lend to him being submissive anywhere) but this person was so demanding about it, to the point where she'd leave anon hate in people's inboxes on Tumblr, that I just don't care to see it ever again.

But I can commiserate with your frustrations, OP. The same thing has happened to me, where I read a fic and it was pretty good and then a certain character ended up being on the bottom (despite the fic leading otherwise) and it just kind of ruined the whole thing for me.
