I adore Tony/Pepper too, and also thought the whole “we're on a break" thing (idk exact wording, only saw the film once) came off as lazy writing. Not that I think these things don't happen in RL... But, it just didn't resonate for me. (It felt kind of contrived, I guess? Civil War in general was a lot of “Tony's life sucks” and I didn't even “side” with him.)

I completely expect them to get back together in the future, though. I don't think they're done; if anything, I feel like they're endgame and this is just a bump in the road.

Totally not with you on the slash thing though, as I've been extremely lucky to enthusiastically ship quite a few main pairings. I have been on the other side too, it's just more rare. (And it does indeed suck, especially if there isn't much fanwork out there for you.)
