I'm not saying it's a bad thing - it is undeniably one of the things that makes his books great - but it is a little frustrating exactly how intertextual some of Gene Wolfe's novels are, and how obscure the choices for that intertextuality can be, and how comparatively little remarked they are, particularly outside of his major works.
