Most phones, including each one I ever owned, has the option that the alarm still works, even if you turn it off. I use my phone as a wake-up alarm too. I turn it off every night and then it turns itself back on a minute or so before the alarm is set. You don't have to, of course. But with my phone, at least, it saves a lot of battery actually.

In the menu where you usually set your alarm like time, repeat, ring tone, volume etc. there is usually an option to decide if the alarm is supposed to apply to your phone in its on or off status.

Sorry for being pushy, but you wouldn't believe how many times I've had this conversation. I'm getting flashbacks >.<

Argh, and all those fuckers that I've actually shown how to set their alarm properly, only to tell me in the end that they don't actually want to turn off their phone at night, because they're worried about missing something at 3am. I should really learn to just shut up in these situations. Boo at me.
