Yes, and I'd say it's a little more than that - people like to imagine that such lifestyles are attainable for themselves, and seeing celebrities who are "just like us" helps enforce that fantasy.

I don't think you need to go that far to account for the phenomenon of their popularity, and I'm hesitant to draw conclusions like that without more supporting evidence.
