What was so bad about this show? Genuinely curious since the wikipedia page makes it sound pretty cool...

OP

Mainly awful production values (just, really cheaply made? obv that doesn't necessarily matter but...it felt cheap), it acted like it was Super Feminist but spent a lot of time on the glamorous hooker life and glamorous hooker body of its female lead (ymmv, but the cognitive dissonance there left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths), and the writing IMO was really hit-and-miss (as is the case with a lot of Whedon projects).

On the plus side, it *is* a cool concept, the main set is gorgeous, a lot of the characters and worldbuilding are really compelling, and it's got some phenomenal acting talent (Enver Gjokaj, anyone??). So there's a lot of awesome stuff to watch for, esp if the above doesn't bother you as much as it does some people.

Yeah, I think a lot of the problem was that it was hyped up as this SUPER SEXY SHOW and it spent far, far too long on how clever and SEXY it all was, with a fine sideline in creeping over the infantalised characters and how SEXY they were. Also Eliza Dushku really isn't a Tatiana Maslany-level actress and didn't pull it off very well. This was highlighted by having (in particular) Enver Gjokaj and Dichen Lachman in the supporting cast and doing spectacular things with their roles.

YES -- these two were AMAZING, slipping seamlessly and perfectly into their roles, layered and believable in ways that Eliza Dushku (whom I love; don't get me wrong) simply couldn't pull off.

Also, the more back story you got, the more the complete loss of self and consent of the 'dolls' became more obvious. Personally, it became really gross to watch.
