I have them, too (though I do shave them) - but if this makes you feel any better: it's one of those on/of genes: you either have them, or you don't, and it has nothing to d with your gender.

I was always told they were a sign of good circulation, but I think that's an old wives' tale. I'm much more inclined to believe it's an on/off gene. I have them, and I have a lot of dark hair all around. (I shave the toes [and the fingers] too!)

Anecdotal evidence: I have hair on my toes and I have the worst circulation of anyone I know. I'm going to agree with you that that's an old wives' tale.

Hair on the fingers and toes is a dominant gene.

Yeah, nobody on either side of my family has hairy fingers or toes regardless of gender or hair color.

Could be a spontaneous mutation, or the hair just showed up darker than an otherwise overlooked vellus-hair appearance in other family members. Aren't genes fun?

Seconding the genetic factor, it's pretty apparent in my family. I've had lots of (non-family) people comment about all sorts of things related to my appearance, but nobody's ever mentioned my hairy toes so it must not be something people really notice in day-to-day happenings. If that helps any. :}
