The fandom has far less genfic than you'd think. OP's best bet for genfic is to look for published short stories in collections, or perhaps the recent novels commissioned from Anthony Horowitz by the ACD estate.

Weird, I'd have figured that's a fandom with a lot of gen.

Eh. In my experience, Sherlock has a bit more gen fic than similarly sized fandoms with such rabid slash fans.

Got any recs?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-10 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, thanks!

nayrt but would any of those happen to be longer, plottier genfics? I'm looking for stuff that basically reads like a Doyle story, revolving around a case rather than brief vignettes, character explorations or one shots.

I don't have any recs other than the ones I sent. But, try looking on Ao3? Search for "case fic" and choose the "gen" category. You will still get some shipping fics but nowhere near as much. Also sort by Kudos.

Sorry. :(

Thanks, I'll try that. :)

And deselect "BBC" or "Sherlock TV" if you want Doyle.

For book canon fics, you can't go wrong with works by https://www.fanfiction.net/u/1464384/KCS or https://www.fanfiction.net/u/578324/shedoc (particularly Medals Not Worn In Public, I reread that one all the time)

If you're looking for something specific, http://holmes-finders.livejournal.com/ is still fairly active and will be able to point you in the right direction.

There is a LOT of gen for the book canon (as well as for the BBC version, not as much for the RDJ movies though). A lot has disappeared, thanks to geocities etc being lost but there's still a lot on ff.net and LJ from years ago and AO3 has a decent amount too.
