Sorta OT, but that's exactly how I felt about Robert Parks (Clive Owen) and Mary MacEachran (Kelly MacDonald) in Gosford Park. Their kiss was hot and Robert was paying her a lot of attention before "the kiss scene," but nothing could convince me he didn't kiss her just to mess with her head and distract her from telling everyone what she had figured out about him, not because of any ~real feelings~ he might have for her. At best, he thought she was cute and would be easy to seduce, and maybe he was even banking that she was enough of a Good Girl that she'd be too embarrassed or ashamed about sleeping with him that she wouldn't tell anyone about him.

I mean, none of this has stopped me from watching that kiss 23413 times, but ngl I feel kinda proud of not fooling myself into thinking there was any kind of ~love for Mary going on there.

Sorry to detour away from the subject of your secret, OP, but I think the situations are similar.

Uh, my wording in the second sentence is confusing, but hopefully you get what I was trying to say.

I know what you meant. I've been meaning to rewatch this movie. I'll have to pay attention to this and see if I agree with you.

AYRT

I actually hated the movie the first time I saw it! Then (for some reason) I watched the commentary with Julian Fellowes and learned how much effort went into making it historically accurate, at least where the etiquette was concerned, and I came to enjoy it for what it was.

Plus, you know, there's that kiss.
