Shrug. I found Mary Russell interesting and complex in her own right, and she made a good lens to see stories.

I think I would've liked the character and series better if it didn't advertise itself as being Sherlock Holmes fic. As you say, she's an interesting and complex character, but shoehorning her into the SH universe doesn't feel very natural. Especially when the author feels the need to insult Watson and downplay Holmes' abilities in order to prop up Mary.

I did get very annoyed at the way Watson was written. (I feel that he's probably smarter than he portrays himself in the stories and has a bit of self-deprecation going on.)
