Huh, it never occurred to me to think that'd surprise some folks. (My mom shaved hers.)

I don't shave mine, but I do occassionally pluck them when I'm bored.

I shave my big toes every time I shave my legs (my other toes don't get hairy, just the big ones).

It can sting like hell if your toe hair gets caught in your socks and yanked out.

Just remember that if it's got hair on it, someone is shaving it. It's a little judgemental to tell someone, "OH, I didn't know some people shave that." Not super judgemental, kind of in the "Isn't that a little young to be going gray," category.

...I legit did not know people did it and was observing that I hadn't heard of it before. How is that at all judgmental? I don't give a flying fuck what other people do with their toes. I find it interesting, but I don't think it's good/bad.
