Beard observations

(Anonymous) 2016-08-11 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
So I've noticed:

Older guys either have a beard or don't. The ones who do keep it neatly trimmed. The ones who don't are clean shaven- no stubble. It seems to just be a style choice and nothing more meaningful to them.

Younger guys will have either a huge hipster beard (though some of the people with this beard will object to being called a hipster), or a regular full beard, or stubble. I hardly ever see younger guys with NO facial hair.

Some of the younger guys with the hipster beards seem to make it part of their identity in a way that most other guys with beards do not. Like posting memes about beards, naming a beard (I have actually known someone to do this), saying guys without beards are women, etc. Some of their memes tend to border on a kind of sexist/homophobic type of thing (complaining about guys they think aren't masculine enough).

Working class white guys often have this kind of little beard that just circles their mouth. It's shaved everywhere else. Like a goatee plus mustache? Occasionally I see it on black guys, but usually it's when there are a group of white construction workers or similar around, half of them will have this beard.

I mean, that may be true for where you are, but I'd hardmy call it something that could be applied to all men.

I don't know about any of this as a generalization, but I don't think it's surprising for older guys to care a bit more about grooming out of professionalism or wanting to be taken seriously and understanding appearance counts.

I have noticed the dick-measuring contests that often come with hipster beards as well, and I also dislike them. And their sexist undertones. :/

Also, I thought goatees automatically included a mustache?

Do you live in a city? I never see younger guys with any facial hair IRL, just celebrities and on tv/in films. But they're always in cities or the media they're in is marketed toward urbanites, so I always just thought it was either an urban thing or a Hollywood thing.

So your observations about beards is that some people have beards but some do not. And some people take their facial hair more seriously than others. And that beards often have trends that make them more popular in different age groups.

How are these observations any different from say...hairstyles or what cars people drive or favorite movie type?

Who said they are? Does this thread have to have a particular purpose to exist?

It is just a pointless observation. Their observations on beards are that...people have different styles and loves of beards. Like everything else in the world.

They were also analyzing the specific differences in styles and approaches to beards. I thought it was interesting, so it wasn't completely pointless since it entertained at least one person. It seems kinda weird to go around calling GC threads pointless because they don't interest you. Just scroll?

Idk, I know a lot of older men who have stubble and younger men with clean shaven faces?

young men keep their stubble because of this effect:

This is an accurate statement, and Ye Olde Gay Comic 'Leonard and Larry' had a strip to just that effect when one of the characters shaves his beard, which he's had the whole run.

That last kind of beard is generally called a "circle beard." Although it should be called a "Ben Sisko."

Re: Beard observations

(Anonymous) 2016-08-12 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
because younger guys don't know how to shave properly

I've noticed a tendency of (white middle class) gay men recently rediscovering their beards. I know like three guys who used to be kinda girly/sissy types with tight clothing and cuteness and so on, and now they and their friends suddenly look like BDSM/Biker Bear types. WTF?
