He made himself a character in his own book? I mean, he's notorious for making a lot of main characters middle-aged white writers, but is it more blatant than usual?

Yep, the character in the books is literally Stephen King, the famous writer who wrote The Dark Tower series and popular horror novels.

He even has one of his own characters compare him to the great master writers of old at one point. The characters need to keep him alive to keep the world from ending.
