>I always assumed Shadow was almost white-passing but not quite. Those are the only people who get asked, "are you partly a minority?"

Yeah, this is what I was assuming. I DON'T read Shadow as white, I don't think he'd see himself as white either, but in my experience people don't ask things like 'so are you part (whatever)' unless you look mostly white.

Like I've never heard someone who looks mostly Asian get asked 'so are you part white' - that's just REALLY WEIRD. If they look mostly Asian, it doesn't matter what they are, they're basically processed as Asian. But I have heard people ask someone who looks mostly white but with solid black hair / dark eyes 'so are you part Asian'.

My high school had one student who was half black, half white. He identified as black but when he shaved his head, he could pass as a darker-skinned white guy. With a shaved head, he'd be asked if he were part-latino or black. With his hair growing out as visibly non-white hair, nobody asked anything. That's a black student. He wore an afro for three years on purpose.

I would be entirely okay with someone who looked like that for the role. Further down in the thread someone suggests actors like Vin Diesel and Wentworth Miller - I think they'd be great choices too. It's not about whether Shadow is or isn't black, or about how he sees himself but rather about how people see him and react to him.

He doesn't look immediately apparently black, which is why people ask him the questions they do. Ricky Whittle on the other hand, DOES look obviously black.

I don't know--I showed a picture of him to a friend when he was first cast as Shadow and said friend questioned if he was black.
