I never finished this book but I thought he was mixed black and Native American.

Anyway...so if I'm understanding this right, you don't think he looks mixed (with anything else) enough?

SPOILERS for book plot, but in terms of what we know about his parents, Shadow's basically half Norwegian half something else. All we get as a physical description of his mom is that she's beautiful, not pale, and not thin.

Either way, I don't think Shadow should be obviously any one particular race, whether that's black or Native American or anything else. Ricky Whittle in terms of how he looks would come off to the vast majority of people as obviously black - regardless of whether or not he is.

OH okay. I can see that.

DA

It was mentioned above, but we know for a fact that one of Shadow's parents is biologically white-Norse. We know that he looks mixed, since everyone else guesses at what the "other" part is, which is why all the questions were like, are you PART-this or PART-that

Gaiman did confirm at some point that Shadow's mother was black.

That's such a weird statement to me. I saw him on The 100 and thought he was mixed, but 'black' was not my first thought. I thought maybe Asian-Indian, Middle-Eastern or Latino, but not black.

Been a while since I read the book, and I've only read it once. I do, however, have Norwegian ancestors. It is a stereotype that Norwegians and others from Scandinavia are blonde haired and blue eyes. According to my family about our very own relatives, some Norwegians are just dark. Dark hair, dark eyes, etc. So that could contribute to Shadow's racial ambiguity in a very real way.

I can't remember how [spoiler] is described in the book but Ian McShane is playing him in the adaptation, and he's dark haired. Idk that we can apply normal genetic rules in this case though, given who the character is.
