That sounds stressful to me. Was there a supply of food they could depend on? Was there protection from stray cats and hawks and all other manner of predators?

They had magic hippie magic to magically protect them. It wasn't that good a book to be honest, which just makes it all the more galling that the idea of the world just being too much hassle so lets all take the commune and go be mice is so beguiling.
