So I finally got myself a smartphone and I am trying to figure out what to do with it. So, I thought I'd ask you guys what are you doing with yours? What kind of apps do you have? I have a couple of specific questions but mostly I'm just looking for general ideas.

The main thing I want, is a good music app. Right now I'm using the standard app,but I am not sure I like it. The main requirement would be the ability to display the music as in the folders on my phone and to differentiate between music and podcasts, fanfic and so on.

The other thing I am looking for is a good tracking app for hiking and running. Anyone using one?

Other than that I'm really just looking for ideas. Games or helpful shit, anything really. My phone is a Samsung a3 and runs android, I guess that could be important.

Google sky map! It is brilliant as a basic introduction to astronomy. I love it.

I have a remote control app for my tv and dvd player since the universal one I used to use stopped working and I never got around to replacing it, a period tracker, Dropbox since I use that a lot to access my writing and notes from different places, an app that clears junk files, Duolingo, and a couple silly games.

What does one do with a smartphone anyway? Imagine that I am the sort of person that still has a greenscreen mini-brick phone, with "snake" on it as the only game, and I am thinking of upgrading to a new mobile telephone because the battery has finally collapsed to maybe an hour's worth of text usage. What should I look for in a smartphone, and what should or can I do with one if I get it? Can you still get those on pay-as-you-go anyhow?

Yes, you can still get pay-as-you-go phones. My sister uses one.

For music, I use Spotify. I pay for the premium service though.

For the problem with all your stuff showing up, the best thing I've found is to use different apps for each one (I have a podcast app, a music app, and a audiobook/fanfic app). You can usually make the music app only pull songs from a designated folder instead of your whole phone.

Games: Tetris, QuizUp, Compulsive. I play these the most.
Utilities: Keep, Flashlight app, Alarm Clock Xtreme

If you can, i'd get some extra storage to go in it. An micro SD card. Your phone may not have a space for it.

I'm mostly on tumblr, beyondpod, spotify, instagram, google docs, kindle

This. My phone does not have space for an SD drive and it is really annoying. It is constantly running out of space and I can't download any more apps and it SUCKS. (My new phone I'm getting for my birthday has an SD slot. I checked.)

Wind Runner
^<--- these are nice mobile games

Only my work phone is a smart phone, but I use email on it all the time when I'm out of the office and also a maps app, a weather app (I do a lot of work outdoors), an app a co-worker uses to have us keep track of certain equipment, and the camera. I have a web browser I sometimes use to find things lie the phone number of a hotel or the hours of a business.

Pokemon Go tbh. That and a decent camera were why I even considered getting a smartphone in the first place.

Being able to use the internet on it with my wifi is a very nice plus, and also having something to do if I am bored somewhere and don't happen to have a book on me (I play a lot of free cell).
