From pictures of Whittle I don't think I'd categorize him as black automatically? Just because I live somewhere with a lot more south asian and middle eastern brown people than anyone of african ancestry.
But I don't live in the states, so it might be that the casting did miss there.

I'm from the States.

Whittle would 100% be a black guy here - if anything they might ask "are you part middle-eastern?" But the fact that he's at least visibly black would be a given.

Nobody would ask him if he's "possibly" black, much less with him answering "could be" like in the book.

Europoor from a mostly white country here, I spent 3 seasons of The 100 thinking he was Latino until I read he was black. He looks like a hotter version of that guy from Prison Break.
