Re: What critically beloved film do you think is overrated?

Think is overrated "The Dark Knight". It only rates so high because Heath Ledger died before its release. If he hadn't then everyone would have said it was dreary, slow, and pretentious.

Actively hate: Serenity.
The Whedonites, again.

I admit to not being a big fan of Dark Knight either, but Batman is hard for me to handle if he's not lightened up by the characters around him--be it Robin, Alfred, Gordon, and so on. Christopher Nolan's Batman was an example of that kind of Batman when there's nobody to drag him out of his own head, and as a result, I really wasn't a big fan of those movies.

I accept that they're good movies. But they are so not for me.

I feel that to work properly, Batman needs a good helping of camp. THe Nolan films just played it too straight and too much of a gun fetishist's movie for me.

This is also true! Like, let's be honest here, at its heart, Batman is about a mentally ill billionaire dealing with crippling trauma by dressing up as a giant bat and terrifying criminals. The premise is inherently ridiculous, and if you can't admit to this on some level, I can't really get into it. I can't help but think, "But guys... HE'S DRESSED AS A BAT. HE HAS POINTY EARS."

I also feel like live-action might have a play in that too. Animation is in some ways more forgiving--it's not real, it's inhabited by Bugs Bunny and Betty Boop, so it inhabits its own reality and rules. Ditto with comics--no matter how realistic the style, it's still not real people. But once you have Batman as live-action, and are trying to play the story as "realistic" as possible, well. That whole goofiness-of-premise thing can cause some major cognitive dissonance.

Maybe that's just me, though.
