Fake Pockets

[personal profile] dani_phantasma 2016-08-14 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
So my bro and I were out shopping for work pants today at Kohls for the new job. I found some uniform pants with fake pockets. I'm looking for pants with good pockets that I can put my phone in, and they're incredibly hard to come by.

Who even likes these things? Where did the fashion industry get the idea that this should even be a thing.

It's a bait and switch,and really inconvenient.

Good luck! Pants with pockets are the best and so hard to find. I do admit that I carry way more things than would fit in pockets (I'm always over prepared) but it's be nice to always know I have pockets.

Thanks

I love pants with good pockets. I would have gotten pants from the men's side but my brother advised me that it probably wasn't the best idea for a professional uniform. Maybe save them for later when I'm on my own dime and not using Dad's money (he sent me money to get some good work pants)

Yeah, I've found a few good pairs ages ago from New York and Company, but I haven't tried them lately and about half of the pants I have from them are also without pockets.

I wish there was a way to search online "DO THESE PANTS HAVE POCKETS?" option. But then be able to try them on in store because I always have to try pants on.

Women's clothes are notoriously short on pockets. It sucks! Pockets take more fabric, and manufacturers are cheap. Do check closely, though, because sometimes the welt style pockets are real; they're just sewn shut and need to be opened with a seam ripper.

A lot of pre-made uniform and work pants don't have pockets because paranoid employers think if they give the staff pockets then they'll steal stuff. Or stand around with their hands in their pockets. Back when arge employers actually had their own uniform departments, and I'm thinking of one Hi-De-Hiing UK Holiday Camp Company in particular here[1], they'd buy trousers and coats on a job lot cheap and then have their uniforms department sew all the pockets shut before fitting them to the staff. If anyone returned their uniform at the end of the season with the pockets re-opened then they were blacklisted to be refused hiring for any further season's work. Back in the day many big department stores had similar policies. Institutional inertia has just carried it from there, especially as specialist suppliers of work clothes have taken over from internal departments. It all comes off old patterns for old machines.

[1]This is because the company's founder was a notorious scam artist and tea-leaf himself and he was terrified other people might be as bad as he was.

Wow, wtf.

Huh. I guess it's one thing about work pants but I don't get why women keep complaining about there being no pockets in any pants ever. It's been a very long time since I've owned pants without pockets. But maybe that's a regional thing?

I don't get it either. I don't think I own a single pair of pants without pockets save for my skinny jeans, and those don't have pockets for obvious reasons.
