Isn't he pretty explicitly said to be a chubby English-looking (TM) white guy? It's been ages....

The only indication I remember that he might be chubby was a reference to him having plump (and manicured) fingers. I've heard people insist he manifests as overweight, middle aged, and balding and looks like Stephen Fry. I don't remember anything like that in the book. I got the impression he was supposed to be really un-hip and his clothes might look out of style, so I can understand why that, combined with the plump fingers, might make people think he was middle aged and fat, but I don't think the book explicitly says any of that. (But doesn't say it can't be true.) (I could be wrong! Book quotes are welcome!) I don't know if this is actual canon or a case of very strong fanon that everyone just assumes is canon because it's what everyone says.

Meanwhile, I've definitely run across descriptions of him in fic and depictions of him in fan art that don't follow the Stephen Fry model by any means, and portray him as younger and attractive, if in a nerdy way. Might be a difference between what people think he's supposed to look like and how they'd want him to look.

I definitely remember the book saying that people always assume he's English.

Which may be where the Stephen Fry thing is coming from. As far as I remember there isn't really a physical description beyond the soft hands, though. I freely admit my mental image of him comes from a fanart:

It's obviously time for a re-read! It's quite possible that neither Crowley *nor* Aziraphale get a really in-depth description, because at the moment, the only 'Crowley' i can picture is the one from Supernatural, and I know that's nothing to do with the book, heh.
