I'm drinking ... probably more alcohol than I should, to deal with the physical pain I'm in constantly. But I'm afraid that if I ask my doctor for the drugs that really help (narcotics) that she'll decide I'm an addict and put it in my file not to give me any, and then I'll be really screwed when the pain gets even worse (7 or 8 that it sometimes gets to, compared to the 5 or 6 that I'm dealing with now.)

Don't wait until you're desperate. The sudden demand will look shadier than simply going to your doctor and admitting that you need more help with pain management. I also shouldn't need to tell you that drinking too much will cause more damage in the long run. Just talk to your doctor.
