The Cafdael series looks intriguing!

It's got a murder mystery format, but it also has a lot of rich detail about the time period. It's a period of history that doesn't get taught much either, so it was particularly interesting. To me anyway.

The Aubreyad also has that rich sense of history. It's very much a swashbuckling series, but a lot of it was based on real events. It's a very... human series. It also has a bit of a Georgette Heyer feel about it.

I tried a Kindle sample of the first Cadfael book and couldn't get past the first few pages. :(
