True, but at least they got him back for that one scene. From what I understand even that might be impossible here. Also, Gideon having a breakdown and leaving made sense for his character. The pilot episode is his first case back after a 6 month sabbatical after a bad case caused him to have problems. He struggled the entire time we knew him with the toll of the job. The S2 finale, the last case he wound up doing, was incredibly tough on him. So leaving made sense for Gideon. Hotch has been through terrible things but he always came back to the BAU. So he either dies, or something happens to Jack or something equally spectacular occurs. I suppose it's possible to come up with a satisfying solution, especially since they have a room full of professional writers and they bought themselves some time with Hotch being 'on assignment'. I'm hoping I'll be pleasantly surprised. And that Hotch won't die, if I'm honest.
