Zoos and Seaworld.

Seaworld as it currently exists, certainly. But not zoos, at least, not the ones where the publicly visitable zoo is the goodwill ambassador part and the gene banks/captive breeding/breeding to release back to the wild/saving species from extinction is, like, the other 90%. Zoos with animals in titchy cages that make no effort to provide enrichment or breeding opportunities for the animals or anything do suck, though.

nayrt but when you say "breeding", I am very skeptical. Some captive breeding programs are maybe useful, but many aren't. Especially in the case of big cats, like tigers. NO zoo should be breeding big cats, ever. Big cats are never successfully reintroduced into the wild, and there are so freaking many big cats already in captivity, there's no shortage of captive lions due to assholes keeping them as pets and black markets buying, selling, and trading them for pets/furs/roadside zoos/whatever. Usually these tigers and such get killed/resold to tiny crappy backwater unlicensed "zoos" when they aren't cubs anymore. Zoos should just be saving existing tigers, and never breeding them.

Generally anyway zoo-led captive breeding programs don't save wild animals. Only habitat restoration can do that.

So you would rather see tigers go totally extinct instead of at least having the captive population still alive? While I think it would be better to maintain wild populations, frankly that is a difficult fight and I would rather still have some well-cared-for captive tigers around than lose the whole species all together,

Captive tigers aren't endangered so for one, that's a moot point. For another, inbreeding is extremely common - to get those stupid white tigers- that the vast majority of tigers in captivity are not genetically useful. This includes zoos.

No, captive tigers aren't endangered, but wild ones are, because most of their native habitat has cultures that have a tendency to hunt them or destroy habitat. The prospect of wild tigers dying out is very likely. When that happens? Captive tiger will be all that's left.

There literally are not enough homes, let alone good homes, for the captive tigers we have. That's why they are frequently abandoned, killed for parts, etc. Seriously. By asking zoos to breed tigers, you are asking them to contribute to the huge problem that is captive big cat breeding... not to mention condemning these tigers to a life behind bars. Plus, they are almost always interbred, and you are not saving a species at all when you do that.

Re: What would you make illegal if you had the power?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-15 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
So, basically, you would rather they go extinct. "Condemning them to a life behind bars" -- I see that you haven't visited a decent zoo in quite some time, and that you also think that a tiger born in captivity would quite naturally prefer to be "free." Anthropomorphize much?

Re: What would you make illegal if you had the power?

What are you even talking about.

I do not want tigers to go extinct. I want tiger populations to be restored by having their habitats restored - the only proper way to do that. Zoos (or other collectors) breeding tigers is NOT CONSERVATION. PERIOD. These captive tigers are ALMOST ALWAYS INBRED and do NOT HAVE THE GENETICS TO SUSTAIN THEIR POPULATIONS LONG-TERM. Furthermore, you fucking have no clue if you think it's totally okay to breed tigers just so they'll ~be around~ and not give a shit that 99.99% of captive tigers have fucking terrible living conditions, and even licensed, well-intentioned zoos can't afford to keep their tigers have the time. Captive tigers are all over the damn place, you could buy one yourself in many states in the US and keep it in a cage the size of a parking space all of its life.

If you support captive tiger breeding programs, you are either one ignorant idiot about the realities of captive big cats and all the "good" it does, or you are one cruel asshole.

Well I'm glad you want all tigers dead.

Jesus christ, you are unbelievable. Educate yourself on the reality of big cat breeding programs, I cannot deal with your stupid.

[identity profile] mimi-sardinia.livejournal.com 2016-08-16 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's not the issue of captive breeding programs that I am so negative about, it is the very real prospect of wild populations being killed by poachers and idiots who think tiger parts are medicinally effective. Even if captive programs are questionable, they may be the last chance to keep the species from dying out.

Re: What would you make illegal if you had the power?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-15 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, there are quite a few species that would have gone extinct by now if there hadn't been zoos and their breeding programs.

Re: What would you make illegal if you had the power?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-15 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't say otherwise. Just that many, probably most zoo breeding programs are short-sighted and don't actually help.

Re: What would you make illegal if you had the power?

there are plenty of good zoos, to pretend they're all harmful to animals by equating them doesn't help anything

Re: What would you make illegal if you had the power?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-15 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but by having one zoo open it creates a precedent. One good zoo -> a dozen bad zoos.

The zoos that exist should be shut off from public (the funding should NOT rely on visitors and revenue), and the facilities should be working towards making sure no more animals are born in captivity. Focus should be on the care of animals, not breeding.

Instead of zoos as we know them, we could have supervised habitats that are only temporary for the existing animals in captivity.

That's a cute pipe dream. How are they supposed to fund it?
