No. This is one of those cooking urban myths that gets repeated and repeated with no actual scientific basis. Much like "if your soup/stew is too salty, add a potato and it will leech out the salt". It's more likely that they either needed a longer soaking time, longer cooking time, or that the lentils themselves are old and too dried out to rehydrate quickly.
