I agree. I think it has to do with her looking a bit more tomboyish (even in her underwear), and combined with how her character acts, people don't really associate her with sexualization. Also at this point, maybe because sexualization in modern media would probably take it further - but, you're absolutely right.

I'd add that Aliens, the second movie, is MUCH more of a cultural touchstone for a lot of people, and I don't think she's in her undies in that one.

The pic of her in the grey shirt and underwear is from Aliens.

But all of the male marines are in their underwear too, only shirtless, in the same scene, so complaining that the heroine is unduly sexualized is... unconvincing.

How many shots of the male marines lying in repose with their back arched so we can see their muscle definition do we get? How about male marines bending over machinery? How about shots of from a low vantage point, so we can see the outline of their dicks through their thin underpants? And I assume all the male marines are wearing thongs that hang off their hips and barely cover their junk, all the better to display their six-pack and that awesome abdomen v ripped guys have. Because if all that happens in Aliens, then I agree with you, the heroine isn't being singled out at all.

+1 I don't know how people can say that a quick shot of guys lying around in their boxes is just as much sexualization as Ripley in a thong and skimpy tee with no bra when it's really obvious the camera angles/shots are meant to show us her body in ways that do not happen with the men.

As has been said, the context for her appearing that way feels different in Aliens. Also...you can see some of her pubic hair in that movie, which really surprised me the last time I watched it.

Honestly I keep Mixing them up, but isn't she in her undies when she's in that forklift thingee battling the queen?

Yup, definitely mixing something up there.
