This is exactly why I don't have facebook or twitter. I don't want people to be able to find me by my real name.

You can just not associate your fandom name with your real life name.

ding ding ding

I'm surprised OP was able to find the fan at all! Though I guess BNFs are sometimes more open with that stuff?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-17 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they are - I know the name of a fandom BNF and could probably dig a lot of RL stuff up on her if I wanted to. (Other people have, she was an old friend of Cassie Claire's.)

(Anonymous) 2016-08-17 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
During the LJ days most people knew the rl names of the BNFs, at least in the major fandoms.

That's what I do, but I can understand why people might be hesitant about that - especially because I was less careful once several years ago and then some point after that (but a few years before now) some random creepy asshole on Kongregate, part of the chat room I'm an on-and-off regular in, somehow managed to dig me up and found my Facebook page. Fortunately the mods cracked down on him when I told them he'd violated my privacy and he left me alone after that, but it was not pleasant.

I'm a lot more careful now.

Weirdly, it's kind of a one-way filter. I don't mind people I know IRL knowing my online identities, but I'm a lot more careful the other way around. I have shared RL info with a few trusted people, most of whom I've fallen out of touch with in the past but one of whom is now a very good friend of mine, but I'm careful about making connections like that.

The idea of it just really freaks me out for some reason. People are crazy.

Nothing wrong with not having one!

The one problem that comes to mind is that Facebook, from what I've heard, is not to fond of pseudonyms. Not that it stops a lot of people (including myself) having accounts under role-play names, but I have heard (second or third-hand) of people who have come to the notice of TPB having their accounts shut down.

My name on FB is the character of a book i love. It's not a 'common' name, either. FB hasn't ever given me any issues, though, so...i dunno. Guess you can't go nutso with something really out there?

Yeah, I think as long as you don't go out of your way to get noticed, you can get away with it.

Facebook didn't like my real name so I've got a nick name. I also discovered last night I could change my FB username! Almost completely disconnect to my old name now. Although if ppl search my full name in Facebook it suggests my account... And a fake imitation me that appears to be sourced from Instagram? That account doesn't post so I'm keeping an eye on it.

Sounds like a good course of action.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-17 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I would love for my fans to have my real name. Heck, I've met most of them in person. Two came out to visit me.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-17 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm curious why you said twitter. Twitter doesn't require you to use a real name, and I've definitely seen people using it for fandom under their fannish peudonynms. Is it just that twitter is so publicly accessible?

Yes

Not even FB requires your real name...or at least it didn't when I signed up. I even change it on occasion, always to something fake.

I think they've been cracking down on this lately...or at least I've heard they are? They have no way to make you prove your name is real, but I've heard it's harder to change it now. Not sure; I've never been so inclined, since I do use my real name there (and keep it away from here).

I've heard rumour of it too, which is why I'd rather keep low profile over there, since I use a pseudonym - and not Mimi Sardinia either.

I do have Mimi Sardinia on Twitter, but I'm mostly on one of my RP accounts.

If anything, Twitter's significant restriction is not being able to run multiple accounts from one email address, but since Gmail is easy enough to get multiple emails on, it can be done, but you can also only link one twitter account to your phone.

A friend of mine was under a semi-false name (the surname was changed), got into an argument with someone and they reported her to FB. FB made her change it :(

ugh, that's petty.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-19 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
They now have a "real name only" policy, and will suspend accounts until you submit legal ID as proof if they catch you. I'm friends with a lot of performers with stage names, so... It's a problem. Also they've suspended Native Americans with names like "James Beartooth" because they "look fake."

That's really fucking stupid. :(
