Re: Uncommon triggers

not a trigger but I have a phobia of small towns, they set me on edge and make my heart race to see unless they're very obvious sets like on a sitcom or something. taking long road trips is the worst for it because between the cities and suburbs I eventually drive through tiny nothing towns with too much space and abandoned looking property. ugh.

That's so strange to me!! I'm sorry of course, it's just strange as someone who grew up in a small town.

Actually, on second thought...as someone who grew up in a small town, that might not really fit the definition of an "irrational" fear.

ayrt

it's such a combination of things– the wide open spaces, the ability to get lost, the disorienting sense you won't be able to find your way, the emptiness (especially when you're just driving by and no one is outside), the expanse of sky, and of course sometimes the people lol.

I've always lived in a California suburb and if I ever got lost I could rely on the mountains to direct me, there's something profoundly lonely and kind of scary if there's nothing I can use. there are some small towns that seem nice, there's just a particular sort that creep me out!

I used to live in a small town and I hated it. Most of the people there were unfriendly and bigoted and resented anyone who wasn't born there.

It's not a phobia for me, but I'm always wary of small towns because I feel like when everyone knows each other and many people are related to each other, you're potentially walking into a minefield of alliances and rivalries you know nothing about.

"Oh, you ate at *that* diner? That's the competition for my the diner my grandparents started, so now I don't like you."

"You hired *that* guy to run the backhoe? Back in the 80s his brother was mayor and [some shit you don't care about went down] so we don't like him by extension and now we don't like you."

There's also this weirdness, like everyone is superficially polite but kind of hostile underneath because you are obviously an outsider.
