Things that sucked - or just weren't the same - once they became popular

Fandoms, websites, RL places you like(d).

I started this because I was thinking about YouTube. In many ways it's great, but I remember when there were fanvids, when there weren't commercials... now fanvids are rare because they can get shut down. I feel this was a result of the site growing, as well as people in the entertainment industry noticing it. And I'm guessing they have ads because they need revenue to keep it up. I totally respect that, it's just... not the YouTube I knew and loved when it first started.

I got an ad blocker. I've never seen any ads unless I am on mobile.

Same here, but I mostly watch YouTube on mobile.

A really nice coffee and sandwich shop near my parents has started attracting a LOT of tourists in the last few years. I'm happy for them, but the atmosphere's different now.

YouTube, DeviantART, Fanfiction.Net. Basically any site that was actually pretty decent, until it exploded and the mods either stopped caring, or turned a blind eye to most of the crap that flooded it unless it was brought to their attention.

FF.net became crap when the parents started wailing about "BUT WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN!?" when it came to R and NC-17 fic. B/

As much as I hate to admit it, AO3 really did used to have a higher proportion of quality fic in comparison to FF.net, back in its early years. Not anymore, lol. If anything it's now twice as bad as the Pit ever was.

"If anything it's now twice as bad as the Pit ever was."

Lol. No.

To be far, I'd say that probably depends on the fandom and/or when the person went on The Pit. ff.n was actually pretty decent back in its day.

It's getting there.

It's the tags. I blame the tags.

No it isn't.

Your first statement is true, though. Oh fuck is it true.

If by "quality fic" you mean "well written but bland ATG fic" then yeah, AO3 isn't like that anymore.

But... well, now that there's as much bad fic as in any other site and at least that bad fic is easy to avoid, unlike the boring stuff that used to dominate.

...What is "ATG" fic?

Re: Things that sucked - or just weren't the same - once they became popular

Any Two Guys. (Or Girls, but that's used less often.)

People who use the term ATG believe in Migratory Slash Fandom, or fans who continually move from one big fandom to the next big fandom in search of hits/comments on their fic, and their fic reads the same way regardless of pairing or fandom.

Eh... the fics had better spelling/punctuation and grammar, but they were kind of boring and pretentious. It was as if every writer was trying to write really flowery, navel-gazey porn. To this day it's a style that dominates on AO3.

"If anything it's now twice as bad as the Pit ever was."

Lmao, good one. AO3 isn't as good as it used to be and it's still spiraling downwards as it grows, but it hasn't even entered the same hemisphere of fuckery that the Pit got up to back in the day.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-19 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly though, it depends on when they got into the Pit. There was a time the fics were fine. Not great, but not as horrible and WTF as they would become.

Facebook in the sense that it was fun before everyone's parents got it. And before Mark Zuckerberg went full-on control freak.

Teen Wolf fandom.

I blame it both on a decline in the show's quality & TPTB engaging with the fandom in the ways that they did. It makes me wanna do PR or something because it's aggravating to me to see the ways that mainstream media misunderstands fandom culture. It never ends well, and with the rise of social media & increased availability of TPTB (actors, writers, etc.), however real or imagined that availability may be, I foresee it only getting worse before it gets better.

Not in TW fandom so I don't know the exact context, but I definitely agree with you generally. I feel fandom was better off when, at best, the creators were mildly amused from a safe distance.

I never ventured very far into TW fandom but very much +1000 on this.

For the most part showrunners/creators do not know how to navigate fandom and while it can be fun to begin with it can swiftly turn into a complete mess by simply saying the wrong effing thing. So while it can be nice at the start I'd rather most shows not even risk opening up the can of worms that is fandom.
