I have a lot of fond memories of this comm, but lately every time I swing by F!S to see what's doing I'm reminded of why I stopped regularly keeping up with it to begin with. This is one of the last vestiges of the fandom culture I grew up with, and it's dying a slow, entropic death, prolonged by an increasingly small and insular faction of stubborn old-timers who won't accept the inevitable and pull the fucking plug.

I'm with you that it's one of the last vestiges of fandom culture as I was introduced to it, but that's why I still post here. Same with Livejournal. I'm not jumping the ship.

Why "pull the plug" if people are still enjoying it? F!S regularly gets 500+ comments a day. Sure, that isn't the levels of 2 years ago, but that isn't nothing.

Today will probably be low because it was posted late, but that is an anomaly.

I'm only barely into fandom (as it's traditionally understood) at all, but I'm here for the community.

+1

Well yeah, true. But what the hell is there to be done about it?

I still like posting here that's why I post here.

Take IP logging off, stop freezing threads, require secrets actually be about a specific fandom issue rather than a giggly tumblresque coy tease that would be more suited to a poster's own diary. Let the wank run free, because it was the unfettered wank that kept this place going and the rush to protect people's feelings has killed the comm stone dead.

I do think it's dying, and I do think that it's getting more bitter. If you think about it, there are two main kinds of people who post here - people who just like the community, and people who miss old-school fandom and are kinda bitter about it. And as people who are OK with new fandom leave for more active pastures, the proportion of people who are bitter increases.

But, that's life.

Or maybe people still really enjoy it? Why "pull the plug" when people are happy?

I've been wondering what happened to the "FS is dying" crowd.

Yeah activity is smaller. There's still activity. Let it die a natural death instead of demanding it be ended now because it doesn't meet your ideal activity levels.

Honestly, I wonder if they're one of the people who respond to secrets about older fandoms with "this is so 2004." Like you're only allowed to enjoy things if they're currently "in."

Maybe it'll make a resurgence - once things age enough they become retro and it's cool to like them again!
