I am writing a fic in the present tense, second person perspective

Where is your god now

Prose snobs

Where is he

...No but seriously though, what Great Literary Fanfic Taboos have you broken with your works? Did you write a fic that used nothing but hair-color epithets? Ended everything with "and then he woke up"? Mashed two pretty boys together that never speak in canon? Confess!

This makes me want to write something that does all of the above.

The golden straw sunshine haired man, who for so long ignored you, in fact, never spoken to you, is kissing you now, but then, just as he, the yellow sunflower haired, opalesceque pools of sky blue eyed, beautiful boy is kissing you, the dark haired man, the glittering green eyed man, but then, you wake up.

All of the above except the dream thing. That one still raises all kinds of hackles with me.

is taking an episode from a series that was already filled with crack (Sure, Haggar, use that powder and make Keith think he's a lion - Voltron: The Third Dimension, aka the CGI series no-one talks about) and making it more crack filled (oh, sure, Haggar, use the powder, only this time the powder merges Keith with the Black Lion) taboo these days?

I don't *think* I've ever done any of these, but I admit I really, really love the "all a dream all along" trope. I know it's lazy writing, I know it's bad, but I just find it so creepy!!! So I guess I haven't actually used it, but I have written a few fics deliberately so that it's ambiguous--it *could* be a dream or it *could* be real, and I won't confirm either way. That's probably worse :P

I kinda like that trope, too. It's a tough one to pull off well, sure, but I think it can be done. And like you said, it can be a creepy (or funny) twist depending on the story.

Wrote a Sailor Moon fic where Mamoru gets killed off so Usagi and Seiya can be together. Yes, it's petty. IDGAF.

I want to read your petty fic because I, too, dgaf.

seconded - would love to read it

(hell, even if was Prince Diamond/Usagi or Ail/Usagi. Anyone besides Mamoru, really)

Mamoru was the blandest body pillow who ever existed.

Haruka/Usagi ftw

I use epithets fairly often (possibly because I read a lot of mythology and folk tales, and they are just overflowing with epithets), but possibly the biggest one is the huge Word file I have of the most outrageous, OTT self-insert Mary-Sue bullshit. It's great fun.

I love epithets when used in fairy tale pastiches! Really adds to the flavour and atmosphere of the prose, gives it that mystical old-timey feel.

In other literary contexts I can see why people would find them annoying, though.

When I was younger I definitely overused epithets, and I only wrote het then so it was doubly stupid.

And I've written first person fic too.

what's wrong with first person?

before Mary Sues were #EXPOSED, I wrote a fic about how me and my best friend crashed the Hogwarts sorting hat ceremony

we literally (heh) crashed the scene because I blew up the doors and my unicorn-riding friend bulldozed over everything

it was so bad

Let me read this, I have this day dream all the time, lol. I like to pretend I do it in the Maruader era and my best friend and I are the most low key interhouse badasses there ever were. Sort of rivals/superiors to Sirius & CO, like we were smart & never got caught/put the Marauders in their place.

YOU MONSTER

I admit to writing self-insert fic. For some time around 15 years ago it was my most popular fic ever. It had fans writing and sending me fic of the fic. To this day I feel all the shame because it was unreservedly me in the fic and just so cliche and terrible and yet people ate it up.

Re: I am writing a fic in the present tense, second person perspective

Oddly enough, I think it's the present tense that'd be most jarring for me out of those :P
(And neither are as jarring as first-person has become.)

I'm currently writing a fic, in third person limited, and using only pronouns to refer to the perspective character.
To make things worse... it's also a soulmate AU D:
(I was tempted to refer to one character with their full title as used by the other, too, but I think that would make "platypus" stop looking like a word within a few sentences XD)

I cannot even begin to imagine what fandom you're in where "platypus" is a title.

Unless it's MGS and their full title is like RAGING PLATYPUS or something.

I write a lot of fic in script format.
I have also used self inserts (they weren't Mary Sues, though!)

I did the same thing (2nd person, present tense). I'm not as ridiculously proud of the fic as I was way back when I was in HP fandom, but I still think it was pretty good, and anyway I have zero shame.
