I don't mean this as a criticism, but I think perhaps there is an issue with your technique. I cross stitch while watching TV, too. It doesn't hurt. It shouldn't hurt. Are you perhaps gripping your needle or fabric too tight, or not taking breaks to stretch your fingers and hands?

haha, no it's okay! It's probably the latter. I do a LOT of stuff on auto-pilot and then afterwards it's like, OMG OWWWW WHY DID I DO THIS TO MYSELF?

I've started setting little timers so I stop and stretch/break etc. :)

Taking breaks is a good idea. You don't want to give yourself carpal tunnel. :( Also make sure you're using the right size needle and thread. Pulling thread through the fabric shouldn't be a struggle.
