Re: ITT: literally no one knows what 'romanticization' means

I mean

I'm not drawing any claims about HTP one way or the other, but just saying "I'm totally aware of the problematic aspects, and not romanticizing them" doesn't actually mean that you're aware of them or not romanticizing them.

It's kind of like how if I say that I'm not racist, that's not in itself proof that I'm not racist. You know?

LITERALLY NO ONE

Well, what do you think I'm missing, then?

depicting something as *titillating* because you find *terrible things titillating* is different from depicting things as *not terrible*

50 SoG is romanticizing, because Christian displays tons of controlling and abusive behaviors that are presented as 'romantic' and 'because he's just so in love with her' and as something that should be desirable *for anna in the story* as an exciting and passionate and idealized happy ending, not because some readers get off it

but HTP is about rape that *is horrible for the people fictionally involved* - which is *true*! it's horrible!

now if EL James came out today and said she knew 50SoG was abusive so it wasn't romanticizing, you'd have a point, because the abuser is still portrayed in the story as Anna's genuine happy ending, but that's not what's happening on HTP

racism I think is a pretty different beast, because you're almost never talking about *depictions* of racism when you talk about things being racially problematic, instead it's fiction that supports stereotypes or erasure. I'd consider bodice-rippers where women say no/mean yes, or start out fighting and then give in so it isn't 'really' rape, which uphold and affirm serious rape culture myths that cause victims to be disregarded way more analogous. I don't think that should be illegal either, mind, but I'd side-eye and examine it a lot more and I don't consume it myself.

Sorry, I think there's a miscommunication here.

I wasn't saying that HTP was, in fact, problematic. Like I said, "I'm not drawing any claims about HTP one way or the other".

The only point I was making is, how they self-define is not necessarily a reliable guide to whether that's true. You have to actually look at what they do. Which is what you're doing here and it's great and I'm sorry I didn't communicate my point well enough.
