Half joking, half serious in practice.

"If anyone asks we're a nice normal family" My mom got a plaque of that at one point as a joke, but honestly I feel like that was our family's motto sometime with how my parents could be about outsider's perspectives and what people might think.

It used to annoy me a little. It sort of reminded me of the Patakis (from Hey Arnold) and their family motto of "sweeping things under the rug". Whenever I have a family I don't think I want to bother so much about appearing to be a nice normal family, I want to be a healthy and functional one that doesn't worry so much of what the neighbors could say.
