I don't know if this is the same fic but there was one where Spike was Rarity's yo-yo breakup sob story friend and then they hooked up after he did a bunch of "are you SURE that's really what you want??" lines. It was like a Nice Guy's Wer dream and was so weird.

Are you referring to this fic? http://www.fimfiction.net/story/87884/drinking-alone-except-with-two At the time I read it, I didn't think it was that bad. (Maybe I'd feel differently about it now?)

Yeah, it was that one. Well-written, but just...the whole point of the story was for Spike's patience and kindness to be rewarded with Rarity's affection, and it parallels the Nice Guy narrative IRL almost perfectly, so it rubbed me the wrong way. If Spike wanted to date/kiss/bang Rarity, could he not just ask her?
