Legally they're required to protect their IP, but the only reason they made a move is because of the attention it got. Most of the time they're happy to ignore fan games.

They didn't really have a choice in the matter. They ignore the things that stay under the radar but when things get that much attention they have to file against it or they could run into we didn't protect our IP issues in the future.
