Well, some of us like the experience of watching shows about different countries. And trying to make a show about Japan about a strange mashup of Japan and the viewer's country can range from charmingly surreal and sort of placeless to blatantly obvious and contrived.

It's not so bad to just let the characters be Japanese.

Okay, but then you presumably have the choice of watching it in Japanese with more accurate English subtitles. You're in the minority of anime viewers, and studios obviously need to try to reach the biggest audiences possible. That's not a bad thing, and some cultural translation doesn't make the overall translation necessarily worse.
