I think this is always more complicated than people give it credit for.

People don't have preferences because they're incapable of imagining sex outside of a gender binary. We just have them because our desire is gendered and inseparable from our experience of our bodies. Women like to dominate men and like to see those same men dominated in fiction, for example. Having a vagina affects how I feel about penetrative sex! It's a little sad if someone only writes and reads and enjoys one thing, but I don't think you can look at someone's posts on the internet and know that about them.

I think part of why slash is so popular is that it's a convergence of many anxieties and desires and interests into one thing. Everyone is a mix, so it's hard to generalize.
