When Country Strong came out, I had two friends who discussed it and talked about how bad the ending was. When I went to see it with my dad, I asked his opinion, and we both agreed that suicide really did seem like the only or the best option for Gwyneth's character. I haven't seen it since it came out (though I did buy the DVD a couple years ago with the intent to rewatch it eventually) but her suicide felt like a natural progression. She'd tried the rehabilitation thing & ultimately realized that in her line of work, she was only getting older and less viable as a country star and decided to end things. It's shitty & it sucks, but it made sense to me. I also related to it as someone who's struggled with suicidal ideation for quite a long time.
