Nothing wrong with Shallura aside from being boring imo, but it's what I like to call a "trash can" ship. It does have fans who genuinely like it for its own sake, but most of the time people only "ship" it because it keeps potential love rivals away from their main OTP and Shiro is Keith's most popular other shipping partner.

If you were in Avatar fandom, you might remember how many Zutara fans were also Taang supporters, not because they actually cared about the ship but because Aang being taken freed Katara up to get with Zuko and because it looked better than killing him off or making him evil like they would do to Mai. I shudder to think about the kind of demonization Shiro would get from Klance fans if Allura wasn't around.

Thanks for the answer. No, I was never in Avatar fandom (or ever watched the show for that matter), but I think I know what you're referring to, from other fandoms. I didn't really think of it that way, since it was the only main character ship I could maybe see some slight canon basis for, toward the end of the season. But then I'm not in the fandom, and don't really care about any of the ships. I was just curious why it might have attracted particular ire.
