[Star Trek: Voyager]

Hey OP, if it's any consolation when I met him the actor (name escapes me) at a con he was super nice.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-21 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Tom? As in the actual male character who got to do stuff and not fade into the background? (Other than the EMH, arguably.) Yeah, Tom was all right.

When I first watched Voyager as a teenager, he was pretty much the only character that I didn't care about at all. Going back as an adult, I expected that to remain the same, but he must've had some weird hidden depths or something because now he's one of my favourites.

He gets a bum rap in season 1 and 2 because during those seasons they attempted to make Neelix look good by making Paris look bad. Season 3 onwards Paris got to shine because they started acknowledging everything he did, and stopped trying to make Neelix look good (although they still pretended that Neelix was good for something, for some reason) at Tom's expense.

I don't remember nearly enough to really being able to discuss this, but I'll say that wow, I somehow forgot that Neelix even existed. How's that even possible.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-21 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know, but I apologise unreservedly for reminding you of that shithead.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-21 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The character or the actor? Because Tom "Ibid" Paris always seemed pretty well liked. The only idiots that seem to have a problem with him are the Mark O'Shira fans, and they find everyone problematic as a general point of principle. Tom Paris is cool. He designed two spaceships, one of which went to infinity (and beyond) is a commando, a medic, a hotshot pilot, can identify shit even without a tricorder, is a skilled rock climber, spy, historian, scientist, and general all round reason as to why Voyager managed to survive Captain "Insanity" Janeway's deranged staggerings around the galaxy.

What? I loved him, and his relationships.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-21 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Even the one with Harry?

From what I remember. Did I do something wrong? Or is this a cheeky shippy response. My slash goggles weren't acquired yet.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-21 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It is the cheeky, shippy one, sorry. But Harry was so gay for Tom and Tom did like to break into Harry's quarters and bedroom at night. The latter is actually canon too.

Haha, fine. I wasn't sure if there might be some "Tom was a crappy friend to Harry" attitude or something.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-21 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Tom was one of my favorites, so you are not alone.

I agree, Tom Paris is a severely underappreciated character who deserves more love, daddy issues and all. I mean, if nothing else, he's responsible for the fabulosity that was Janeway as Queen Arachnia in that one episode, and that's gotta count for something, am I right?

On a semi-related note, anyone got any good Paris/Chakotay fanfic recs?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-21 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It is more customary to ship Chakotay with Harry Kim, or woodworm.

[personal profile] cakemage 2016-08-21 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
So? I happen to like the talking wooden plank with Tom instead.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-21 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Are you sure you would not prefer Harry/Chakotay, the union of the beta males and eunuchs instead? I mean I know there are no wrong ways to do fandom, but that is definitely not the right way.

Looved Janeway as Queen Arachnia omg

(Anonymous) 2016-08-21 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I freaking LOVED him when I was a teenager. Was a member of his (actor's) fanclub and everything. I can't say he's objectively the most interesting character on the show, because it's sci-fi and most of his issues would fit just as well on a regular show. But he always had decent storylines and acting from what I can remember, unlike some of the other characters.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-22 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
are they? aw. I'm cool with Tom Paris

(it's Neelix I can't stand)

Oh, Neelix. Why. Just why?

He's still my favorite Voyager character.

Captain Proton! Sandrine's! Writing a holonovel with Tuvok! The Delta Flyer!

Also, Robert Duncan McNeill seems like a pretty nice guy, by all reports, and he's not a bad television director either (actually a fair amount of Star Trek actors are pretty good episodic directors - Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, Roxann Dawson, etc.).
litalex: Jefferson from John Adams, lounging around (LOL!Jefferson)

[personal profile] litalex 2016-08-22 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I really like him, too, though more as part of Chakotay/Paris.

Never heard much hate against him, though... We must be travelling in different circles.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-23 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
I love him too!
