There are a pretty huge crapload of DVD rippers out there, so long as your computer has a CD/DVD RW drive. I suggest reading some reviews and seeing which one best fits your needs.

As far as video editing though... unfortunately this is a lot harder if you don't want to shell out for or pirate a professional editing tool. The new version of Windows Movie Maker is utter shit. I'd heartily recommend the old version as it was incredibly intuitive for beginners, but if you can manage to track it down without downloading malware then I'd have to congratulate you.
