Redemptive love done well
(Anonymous) 2016-08-21 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)Most of the ones I can think of are bad, in the "that's a nice story but what a totally unrealistic fairy tale" way.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-21 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)What I love about this story (and others like it) is that it's his love for her that redeems him, not the Love of a Good Woman. Because that story's bullshit -- you can love someone to death and that won't cure them of their problems, exorcise their demons, stop them drinking, or whatever. But their own love for someone or many someones can do all those things by giving them not only the reason but the energy and will to better themselves.
By the way, this was the original version of Courtly Love that the clergy in the Middle Ages promoted in order to change the culture of the ruling class to something less violent and more Christian. The principles of Chivalry held that it was a man's love for his lady that gentled him, not the lady's love for the man. Of course there was all manner of misogyny at work behind those principles, but it strikes me today that this message is far more healthy than the bullshit our culture tries to push about women changing men through the power of their love.
