I think it's safe for you to watch the series. The shipping canon wise is pretty much non-existent and it focuses heavily on the story and the characters.

Also Keith and Lance was more of a one-sided rivalry that was there for like the first episode? And then it just faded into silliness. I don't ship it (or anything for that matter) but from my observations they seem to be getting better at getting along.

Also I have really no idea how fandom portrays the characters so if someone would fill me in I'd appreciate it, but the few glimpses at it (at least on the /co/ threads) says you're not so wrong on how they portray Keith.

edit: and now that I think about it, isn't the studio animating Voltron the same that animated Avatar and Korra? Because that might explain why the shipping blew up like it did.
