I've seen people who've actually lost important people to cancer get really uncomfortable when the word "cancer" is used in these kinds of contexts, so I personally don't like to do it. (I was pretty young when my aunt had cancer and then died, so it probably didn't affect me quite as much as it affected most of my family and relatives, but I remember it being a pretty harsh time for everyone, and I can imagine that a lot of people who've been through that - or who've battled cancer themselves, for that matter - wouldn't want to be reminded in this manner...)
