My boyfriend's relationship with his mom is like this. His childhood was one filled with neglect and she basically treated him like you would a pet - she wanted a companion who'd love her unconditionally, but only when she had time for him. When he got in the way of her pursuing her relationships with abusive assholes, she shipped him off to relatives.

He doesn't hate her, but they don't have a relationship. There's been too much water under the bridge and she's still a pretty selfish person. But at the same time, she claims to be confused as to why they aren't best friends and she absolutely refuses to consider that maybe his crappy childhood had a lot to do with that.
