The sewing? It's not common here. There are people who earn a living in third world countries by performing with snakes still. It's not a very nice thing to think about, but it happens.

They only bite to hunt or if they feel threatened, so you're not likely to get nipped playfully like you are with a dog (to use your comparison). I guess if you raise them and handle them gently then they're not threatened by you? He's a chill snake. He seems very relaxed with being handled.

It's not safe, but it is probably one of the less deadly snakes he has in his collection - a red belly. He'd be in pain if it bit him but he'd probably live. His brown snake and death adder are more dangerous to him even though he takes more precautions handling them.

I didn't mean like playfully nipping, I meant like a dog has a pack mentality and can recognize and learn to trust individuals. I'm not sure a snake's intelligence extends that far, so I'd consider them a threat to anyone even if they "hand-raised" them.

It's cool that it's working out for this guy though! I'd never do it. I love handling non-venomous snakes, and love looking at any and all snakes; they're seriously among my very favorite animals. But I don't think I'd put my safety on the line for what this guy is doing! I guess I'm not the "adrenaline rush from risky behavior"-loving type person.
