With the increasing visibility of fandom in non-fandom-specific spaces, I kinda wonder if it isn't because the show writers are trying to make it explicit that the characters are canonically straight, so as to try to avoid the kind of wackadoodle batshittery that, for example, the Sherlock fandom has engaged in re: characters being TOTES CANONICALLY GAY YALLS, EVEN THOUGH THERE IS NO EXPLICIT EVIDENCE IN CANON AND JOHN IS MARRIED TO A LADY, THE WAY HE SET DOWN HIS TEA CUP ONE TIME MEANS HE WAS SECRETLY LONGING TO BONE SHERLOCK AND IF YOU DISAGREE YOU ARE AN EVIL BIGOT WHO SHOULD DIE.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-23 10:10 am (UTC)(link)Okay, honestly, I was lowkey thinking that but I didn't want to say anything because I was afraid people were gonna tell me I have my conspiracy goggles on too tight lmfao. I can't help but wonder if some creators put those weird little pushy odd "see straight guy here" contrived moments just to avoid some of the MAJOR DRAMA that can come with a character of a popular-with-slash-fandom series having an ambiguous or not explicitly stated sexuality.
